SWOON: Yvoire

With the nickname 'gem of the lake', Yvoire is a medieval French city bursting with charm. Adorning Lac Léman (Lake Geneve) in the department of Haute-Savoie in the southeastern French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the 14th-century village is considered one of the country's plus beaux*.

A treat for historians and green thumbs, Yvoire is renowned for its beautiful springtime blooms and well-preserved medieval atmosphere. With cobbled streets and stone houses, remnants of fortified walls and the striking Chateau d'Yvoire, the village is picture-postcard perfect.

Not to be missed is Le Jardin de Cinq Sens (The Garden of the Five Senses) – a spectacular garden designed to engage all the senses.

Hungry after your morning French lesson? *Pas de problème. You'll find satisfaction in local specialties like saucisson brioché, tarte à la praline and Salade Lyonnaise. Oops, we may have given the game away there…

L'Origine du Monde (Dear Mother)

“When Jean-Louis' heart stops beating, he must confront his Oedipal issues — and ask his mother an unthinkable question — or he'll be dead in three days.”

If you’re looking for a light-hearted French comedy, we recently received a recommendation from one of our students. Starring and directed by Laurent Lafitte, Dear Mother or L'Origine du Monde* had our chouchou* “laughing so hard she couldn’t breathe.”

Sound good? You can stream Dear Mother on Netflix or view la bande annonce* here.

Petit avertissement (small disclaimer): for the relatively broad-minded.

Recette: Aligot

Searching for the ultimate indulgent side for your next dinner party – calories de damned? Then look no further than the creamy, cheesy, carb-laden French dish, aligot* (or cheesy mashed potatoes).

From pommes de terre fondants* to Pommes Anna* and tartiflette, the French are masters at elevating the humble spud to dizzying gustatory heights. And silky, stretchy, garlic-infused aligot – a speciality of the Aubrac region in the south of Auvergne – is a decadent taste sensation.

Just make sure you’re prepared for an arm workout as this side requires A LOT of stirring.

Tip: The recipe calls for tomme fraîche d'Auvergne a semi-hard cow’s milk cheese that can be hard to source. If it’s not on offer at your local cheesemonger, Gruyère and Comté make good substitutes.

Bon appétit*!

Merci au Marmiton pour la recette*.

Carette

Lovers of hot chocolate will tell you no trip to Paris is complete without a trip to the iconic and opulent Angelina Salon de Thé on Rue de Rivoli. But another contender for the best cup in town is the equally Insta-famous, Carette.

Founded in 1923, Carette has three bustling locations. However, the original and most popular outpost is at Place du Trocadero – making it the perfect spot to visit after taking your happy snaps of la Tour Eiffel*.

With art deco-inspired interiors and une terrasse* perfect for people-watching (and filming TikToks), the café is renowned for its silky hot chocolate, served with copious amounts of freshly whipped cream.

Not as thick as Angelina’s chocolat chaud* (which almost requires a spoon), Carette’s viral hot chocolate is said to be a little sweeter. According to some, it’s the crème de la crème*. But we’ll leave the taste testing up to you.

SWOON: Lac d’Annecy

Located in the Haute-Savoie region of southeastern France, près des Alpes françaises*, Lac d'Annecy is a popular destination touristique* that attracts around 2.5 million visitors annually. And celebs such as actor Jean Reno who owns property in the area.

Spanning approximately 27.5 square kilometres, the alpine lake is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, often cited as the cleanest in Europe, and surrounded by picturesque mountains that lure nature lovers all year round.

With equipment rentals dotting the shoreline, it’s the perfect spot to indulge in water sports like paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing – or take it easy with a scenic boat tour. Prefer to stay on dry land? There’s a 42-kilometre-long bike path and numerous hiking trails to keep you occupé(e)*, including Mont Veyrier and La Tournette.

For less adventure and plus de culture*, head to Annecy at the lake’s northern tip. Dubbed the ‘Venice of the Alps’, the charming medieval town is home to winding canals, châteaux* and historic architecture. Plus, a vibrant cultural and dining scene accessible by train from Paris and Lyon – and less than an hour’s bus ride from Geneva.
