SWOON: Le Marché des Enfants Rouges

Like so many Parisians and gourmands worldwide, we were gutted to see the destruction of the city’s oldest surviving covered market last month. Dubbed “the coolest market in Paris” by Time Out, le Marché des Enfants Rouges was founded in Le Marais in 1615 and narrowly escaped demolition in the 1980s amidst redevelopment plans for *la mairie.  

While the mayor has promised that the market will return, it may be an exercise in patience, with the rebuild expected to take several years. In the meantime, you can lap up some of the market’s history by listening to this vodcast by the brilliantly named Fishwives of Paris.
